The CVV code is a security feature for "card not present" transactions (e.g., Internet transactions), and now appears on most (but not all) major credit and debit cards.
The code is the last 3 or 4 digits printed, not embossed like the card number, on the signature strip on the back of the card. On American Express cards, the code is a 4 digit number printed on the front side of the card above the card number.
When you provide your CVV code to an online merchant, they will use it to verify that you are indeed in possession of the card. This verification method helps reduce fraud associated with card-not-present transactions.
It is important to note that the CVV code is not your card's secret PIN number. Do not enter your PIN number when prompted for a CVV code. Doing so could give criminals access to your account.
If you have any questions about your CVV code or how it is used, please contact your card issuer for more information.
