Christian nurses are not the only ones who experience ethical dilemmas throughout their careers. However, the society expects them to be caring, loving, and committed to their calling. In fact, more than other professionals, they have a splendid chance to practice what they believe in, disseminating Christian ideas and displaying God’s love towards all human beings.
The greatest challenges that many Christian nurses experience and acknowledge are connected with various kinds of prejudices. However hard they may try, they cannot completely overcome these feelings which considerably influence the quality of their work. The most discussible questions in nursing practice concern abortions, euthanasia, genomics, stem cell research and relations with difficult patients (Salladay, 2006, p.31). Nurses constantly try to be as indulgent as possible. Apostle Paul states: “Just as a nursing mother cares for her children, so we cared for you” (1st Thessalonians 2:7-8). He means wet-nurse, reminding that a sense of nurturing is a characteristic of Christian nurses (Shelly, 2013, p.7).
Nurses who are propelled by faith in everyday practices expect to receive the reward that is greater than praise from colleagues or thankful patients, remembering Jesus’ words: “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Mt. 25:40). They expect eternal reward that God gives those who follow Him in all situations. The scripture is replete with instructions how to deal not only with difficult patients and various moral issues but also with everyday challenges. Christian nurses must be aware of various cultural and religious beliefs of their patients. They should not refuse from caring about them simply because the patients’ religious views are different from their own. Instead, they should be motivated by Jesus’ words recorded in Mt. 28:19-20. He encourages his followers to covert the non-believers to Christianity, acknowledging their faith in Jesus Christ and teach them to obey the commandments.
