Max Scherzer and the Detroit Tigers won their appeal on a wild play, and Joe Nathan escaped a ninth-inning jam to hold off the Kansas City Royals 3-2 Sa ... ay and boost their AL Central lead.

The Tigers increased their edge to 2 1/2 games over the Royals in the AL Central. Kansas City got some help when the Astros beat the Mariners, 10-1, and the Phillies topped the A's, 3-0. The Royals and Athletics are separated by 1/2 game in the wild card.

Detroit, seeking its fourth straight division title, has won 13 of 18 against the Royals this year, including eight of nine at Kauffman Stadium.

Scherzer (17-5) outpitched James Shields (14-8). The Royals put two runners on against Nathan, but he retired Nori Aoki and pinch-hitter Raul Ibanez on grounders for his 33th save in 40 tries.

It was 1-all in the sixth when a line drive and a wild throw led to an appeal to s and a pair of umpire discu sions that wound up ruling a Royals runner had left third base too soon.

In the Brewers' win, Elian Herrera sprinted home on Logan Schafer's sacrifice fly in the ninth inning.The Brewers overcame the ejection of starting pitcher Matt Garza and won for just the second time Montrezl Harrell Jersey in their last 13 road games. Pittsburgh had won five in a row.

In San Diego,Andrew Cashner pitched brilliantly into the ninth inning and kept the Giants from gaining ground on the NL West-leading Dodgers, who lost earlier in the day to the Cubs, 8-7.The Giants remain 3 1/2 games behind the Dodgers.

Cashner (5-7) took a two-hit shutout into the ninth before allowing Hunter Pence's 20th home run, a leadoff drive to left on a 1-0 pitch. Joe Panik followed with a single to left to chase Cashner, who threw 106 pitches. He struck out seven Jerome Robinson Jersey and walked one.
