Not every cool baseball feat gets the love it deserves. We tend to lump all the praise onwhat onemightcall Tier 1 historicaccomplishments: super-long hitting streaks, high-strikeout games, four-homer games, etc.
But there are other in-season feats throughout baseball history that perhaps should be called Tier 1.5 accomplishments super-coolthings that tend to go undiscu sed, but thatwe really need to remember and appreciate.
George Brett has one of those Tier 1.5 things that he accomplished during atorrid six-game stretch in May 1976.
Sterling Shepard Jersey MORE:
From May 8 through May 13 that year, Brett had an incredible streak of six straight games with at least three hits. Roll that around in your brain for a minute. Six consecutive games with three hits.
That's Phil McConkey Jersey rare. So rare that Brett is one of only two players in MLB history to do it, and the only one since 1923.
Starting with that May 8 game against the Orioles, Brett went 18 for 26 over the six games(a .692 average). Of those 18 hits, 16 were singles, and they produced just four RBIs. Still, that kind of productionwas good for a 1.560OPS. You'll take that over a six-game stretch or any stretch for any player at any time.
Let's break the hits down further:
May 8 vs. Orioles
Brett went 3 for 4 (all singles)against Ken Holzman and Doyle Alexander of the Orioles. The Royals won 6-3.
May 9 vs. Orioles
Brett went 3 for 5 (all singles) against Jim Palmer and Ro s Grismsley. The Royals won 7-4.
May 10 vs. the Twins
Brett went 3 for 5 (a double and two singles), with all three hits coming Deandre Baker Jersey off Bert Blyleven. The Royals lost 5-4 in 10 innings.
May 11 vs. the Twins
Brett went 3for3 (all singles, plus a walk) with an RBIagainst Jim Hughes and Tom Burgmeier. The Royals won 6-3.
May 12 vs. the Twins
Brett went 3 for 5 (all singles)with two RBIs against Joe Decker and Vic Albury. The Royals won 17-5.
May 13 vs. the White Sox
Brett went 3 for 4 (a homer, two singles and a Evan Engram Jersey walk) against Bart Johnson, Jim Otten and Francisco Barrios. The Royals won 13-2.
Before the six-game streak, Brett's batting average was.277. After the sixth game, it was.396. That ma sive jump is mostly attributable tolowearly-season at-bat totals, of course, but it's impre sive nonthele s. And he wasn't just taking advantage of weak pitching, either. Five of those hits came against in-their-primefuture Hall of FamersPalmer and Blyleven. (Palmer was the eventual Cy Young winner that season, by the way.)
The streak came to an end May 14, when Brett when 0 for 2 with a walk and sacrifice fly in a 7-1 Royals win. The hot stretch helped put Brett on the cover of The Sporting News a few weeks later.
The rest of Brett's1976 season was almost as good. He finished the year leading the AL in hits (215), batting average (.333), triples (14) Dexter Lawrence Jersey and total bases (298) good for 7.5 bWAR, his first of 13 straight All-Star appearances, and a second-place finish behind ThurmanMunson in the MVP voting. Not to mention his leading the Royals to 90 wins and a division title.
And, of course, Brett's 1976 season helped propel him further on a Hall of Fame path that ended with 3,154 hits,a lifetime .369 on-base percentage and 88.7 bWAR.
SinceBrett's impre sive six-game stretch, only one playerhascome close to matching it the Astros' Jose Altuve, who had five straight three-hit games in 2017.
As streaks go, Brett's 1976 hit barragedoesn't get brought up often. But it Will Hernandez Jersey 'sone to appreciate.
