The rumor: One of the top storylines from last offseason, when Cruz eventually wound up with the Orioles on a one-year contract after a seemingly endle s courtship with Seattle, is back, thanks to Ken Rosenthals Josey Jewell Jerseys report at Fox Sports that
The rationale: Cruz led the major leagues with 40 home runs in 2014, and it was not just a product of playing in hitter-friendly Baltimore, as only 15 of his dingers were hit at home. In fact, that Cruz would have lost only one home run had he played all his games at Safeco Field.
Cruz became the first player since Jim Thome in 2006 to go deep 40 times in his age-33 season or later, and just given natural regre sion trends, expecting him to have another season as big as 2014 would Kary Vincent Jr. Jerseys be foolhardy. Still, Cruz makes a lot more sense for the Mariners now than he did a year ago, as when Seattle was discu sing Cruz last winter, it was with Corey Hart and Logan Morrison already in place, and playing Cruz in that spacious outfield on a regular basis would have been a nece sity.
The Orioles used Cruz as a designated Peyton Manning T Shirts hitter for 89 games, and in the outfield for 70. If he goes to Seattle, that mix should tilt even more heavily toward DH, and having the righty-hitting Cruz hitting back-to-back with the lefty-hitting Robinson Cano would be an obvious matchup problem for opponents.
The reality: Cruz, who would cost only money and a draft pick, makes more sense for Seattle than Kemp, who, while four years younger, would require sacrificing talent, then paying $107 million over the next five years. Kemps defensive shortcomings are so severe that even in a year where he had an .852 OPS and 25 home runs, his WAR was 1.1, according Duke Dawson Jr. Jerseys to baseball-reference.com. Its not out of the realm of po sibilities that the Mariners could look at Kemp as a DH, too, but the smart money would not be on a team looking at a Gold Glove winner from 2011 who still is only 30 years old as a full-time DH
